Walled up

We have basement walls!

We also have a ton of mud.  We left with some of it still attached to our shoes.  Blech.

In other news, I met with our PM today and the plumber was on site doing his thing.  PM explained the two-level foundation...apparently you have to dig at least two feet to get to undisturbed ground, and two levels keeps them from having to build a 12 foot high wall without supports.  The space under the "great" room and morning room half of the house will be filled with gravel prior to the slab being poured.  We also lucked out in that the plumber says we won't need a sump pump or ejector pump (for the sewer, I think?) because everything will be able to drain via gravity.

The current plan is to pour the slab on Friday, and hopefully they can start on framing as early as Monday!

  1. This is great Amanda!! Congratulations for staying on schedule!

It is so obvious we are building two different elevations and the land our house sits on is totally different too. We need a sump pump to control the water flow. When are they going to water proof your home? It would be fantastic to see the framing start next week!!

BTW-I have two different pair of crocs that I have designated as my construction site shoes. They are easy to wash off when the ground is muddy.

  3. You may want to get a second opinion on the sump pump. I am no expert but talking just from experience. If you don't have a sump pump gravity may be able to do it's thing...but if you have a lot of rain in a short period of time it could still flood your basement and sump pumps are no joke to install later...we had to do that for my mom's house and they practically had to dig up the entire house to do it.

  4. I agree with the above comment. I don't think there's any harm in getting one, even if it's not really needed. It will be in one corner of the storage area of your basement.

  5. I agree 110% on the sump pump - it definitely won't ever HURT things...

  6. Amanda, at our pre construction meeting I talked a lot about the sump pump's location because it was interfering with my laundry room set up...anyway he continued to explain that I would need to access it at least once a year and during emergencies if the water flow became excessive which is why I was surprised too when you mentioned in your selections that you did not need one. I was trying to get him to install it under the steps. I did see it set up that way but it was a no go! If you do decide to ask about it and get one installed before it's too late--be sure to ask for the battery pack too.

    1. BTW-Did they deliver your wood so that can begin framing on Monday? How are they doing out there?

    2. I think the difference is that we have WAY more slope than you do. I'll have to try and get a picture from behind the lot so the slope is apparent.

We went by Friday around 11:30, and at that point there wasn't any lumber. Anything could have happened since then, though!
